A common question from editors is
"How can I change the names of the tapes that my assistant logged for me?"

Here I will show you how you can change the name of a tape. This is not the same as modifying a clip's source,
I'm referring here to taking an existing source tape and telling the Avid to call it something different.
The tape is the same, no timecodes are changed, we're just changing its name.

here's where we start

Here is a portion of the bin my assistant digitized some footage into.
The tapes hadn't been entered into our vaulting system, so they lacked proper barcode indentification.
He just named the tapes "Tape 1", "Tape 2", etc.

Choose Set Bin Display from bin menu

Using either the bin's "hamburger menu" or the Bin menu from the toolbar, select "Set Bin Display".

This command presents a dialog where we can choose what is shown in a bin.
There are always items in your bin that are simply not being displayed, things like sources,
rendered effect files, and in some cases, masterclips and subclips that are referenced by a sequence.

We're going to change the default bin display so we can see the actual sources of these master clips.

turn on souces

So here we are. We turn on the checkboxes for Sourcesas well as Show Reference Clips.

If we only checked Sources, we wouldn't see a change in the bin because
those clips are considered reference clips, therefore we must be more explicit about displaying them.

now change all the names

Now we change the names. This is really easy.
Find the source clip, indicated by the cassette icon, and enter the new name into the name field.

The related clips update their Tape heading as soon as you hit Enter after typing in the new name.
If you screw up, just re-type the name.

Any other bins that are currently open that contain references to these sources will also update.
If closed bins also contain related clips, you'll need to open them while this bin is open so they can update themselves.

turn reference clips back off now we're done

Lastly, hide the source icons by going back to Set Bin Display in the Bin menu or the bin's hamburger menu.

That's all there is to it!

How fast is this, really?
